ಒಂದಾನೊಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ, ಒಂದು ಹಸಿರು ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ, ಒಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟ ಮೊಲ ಇತ್ತು. ಅದು ಜಿಗಿಯುತ್ತಾ, ಕುಣಿಯುತ್ತಾ, ತುಂಬಾ ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಓಡುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.

ಅದೇ ಕಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಆಮೆಯೂ ಇತ್ತು. ಆಮೆ ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ, ನಿಧಾನವಾಗಿ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.
In the same forest, there was also a tortoise. The tortoise walked slowly, slowly.

ಮೊಲಣ್ಣ, ನಗಬೇಡ. ಬಾ, ನಾವಿಬ್ಬರೂ ಒಂದು ಓಟದ ಸ್ಪರ್ಧೆ ಮಾಡೋಣ.

ನೀವಿಬ್ಬರೂ ಸಿದ್ಧರಾ? ಆ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ಮೇಲಿನ ಹೂಮಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಯಾರು ಮೊದಲು ಮುಟ್ಟುತ್ತಾರೋ, ಅವರೇ ಗೆದ್ದವರು!
Are you both ready? Whoever touches the flower garland on that hill first is the winner!

ಸರಿ, ನಾನು ಎಣಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಒಂದು... ಎರಡು... ಮೂರು... ಓಡಿ!
All right, I will count. One... two... three... run!

ಮೊಲ ಗಾಳಿಯ ಹಾಗೆ ಓಡಿತು! ಒಂದೇ ಕ್ಷಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದು ಕಾಣದಾಯಿತು!
The hare ran like the wind! In just a moment, it was out of sight!

ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದೂರ ಓಡಿದ ಮೇಲೆ, ಮೊಲ ಹಿಂದೆ ತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡಿತು.
After running a little way, the hare turned and looked back.

ಆಮೆ ಎಲ್ಲೂ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ! ನನಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಸಮಯ ಇದೆ. ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ನಿದ್ದೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ.
The tortoise is nowhere to be seen! I have lots of time. I'll sleep for a little while.

ಮೊಲ ಒಂದು ತಂಪಾದ ಮರದ ನೆರಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಲಗಿತು. ಗೊರ್... ಗೊರ್... ಗೊರ್...
The hare lay down in the shade of a cool tree. Snore... snore... snore...

ಆಮೆ ನಿಲ್ಲದೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಲೇ ಇತ್ತು. ಅದು ಮಲಗಿದ್ದ ಮೊಲವನ್ನು ದಾಟಿ, ಮುಂದೆ ಹೋಯಿತು!
The tortoise kept on walking without stopping. It went past the sleeping hare and on ahead!

ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಹೊತ್ತಿನ ನಂತರ, ಮೊಲಕ್ಕೆ ಎಚ್ಚರವಾಯಿತು. ಅದು ಕಣ್ಣು ಉಜ್ಜಿಕೊಂಡು ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ನೋಡಿತು.
After a while, the hare woke up. It rubbed its eyes and looked all around.

ಅಯ್ಯಯ್ಯೋ! ಆಮೆ ಹೂಮಾಲೆಯ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಬಂದುಬಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ! ಬೇಗ ಬೇಗ, ಓಡು ಓಡು!
Oh no, oh no! The tortoise is already near the garland! Quick, quick, run, run!

ಮೊಲ ಜೋರಾಗಿ ಓಡಿತು. ಆದರೆ... ಆಮೆ ಮೊದಲೇ ಹೂಮಾಲೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟಿತು! ಆಮೆ ಗೆದ್ದಿತು!
The hare ran as hard as it could. But... the tortoise touched the garland first! The tortoise won!

ಭೇಷ್, ಆಮೆ! ನೀನೇ ಗೆದ್ದೆ! ಈ ಹೂಮಾಲೆ ನಿನಗೆ!

ಅಬ್ಬಾ... ಸುಸ್ತಾಯಿತು! ಶಭಾಷ್, ಆಮೆಯಣ್ಣಾ! ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕ್ಷಮಿಸು. ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ನಾನು ಯಾವತ್ತೂ ಜಂಬ ಪಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
