ಒಂದಾನೊಂದು ಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ, ಒಂದು ನದಿಯ ದಡದಲ್ಲಿ, ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ನೇರಳೆ ಮರ ಇತ್ತು.
Once upon a time, on the bank of a river, there was a big jamun tree.
ಆ ಮರದ ಮೇಲೆ ಒಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟ ಕೋತಿ ವಾಸವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅದು ದಿನವೆಲ್ಲಾ ಸಿಹಿ ಸಿಹಿ ನೇರಳೆ ಹಣ್ಣು ತಿನ್ನುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.
A little monkey lived up in that tree. All day long, it ate sweet, sweet jamun fruit.
ಒಂದು ದಿನ, ಒಂದು ಮೊಸಳೆ ಈಜುತ್ತಾ, ಈಜುತ್ತಾ, ಆ ಮರದ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಬಂತು. ಪಾಪ, ಅದು ತುಂಬಾ ದಣಿದಿತ್ತು.
One day, a crocodile came swimming and swimming, up close to that tree. Poor thing, it was very tired.
ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ, ಮೊಸಳೆ ಅಣ್ಣಾ! ಇಗೋ, ಈ ಸಿಹಿ ನೇರಳೆ ಹಣ್ಣು ತಿನ್ನು!

ಅವತ್ತಿನಿಂದ, ಕೋತಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮೊಸಳೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗೆಳೆಯರಾದರು. ಪ್ರತಿ ದಿನ ಮೊಸಳೆ ಮರದ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಬರುತ್ತಿತ್ತು.

ಕೋತಿ ಮೇಲಿಂದ ಹಣ್ಣು ಎಸೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಮೊಸಳೆ ಬಾಯಿ ತೆರೆದು ಹಿಡಿಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತು... ಗುಳುಂ!
The monkey would throw fruit down from above. The crocodile would open its mouth and catch it... gulp!
ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ದಿನವೆಲ್ಲಾ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಾ, ನಗುತ್ತಾ, ಖುಷಿಯಾಗಿ ಇರುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು.
All day long, the two of them would talk and laugh, and be happy.
ಒಂದು ದಿನ, ಮೊಸಳೆ ಕೆಲವು ನೇರಳೆ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿಗಾಗಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಯಿತು.
One day, the crocodile took some jamun fruits home for its wife.
ಆಹಾ! ಈ ಹಣ್ಣು ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಿಹಿ! ಈ ಹಣ್ಣು ತಿನ್ನುವ ಕೋತಿಯ ಹೃದಯ, ಇನ್ನೂ ಎಷ್ಟು ಸಿಹಿ ಇರಬಹುದು!
Aha! This fruit is so sweet! The heart of the monkey who eats this fruit must be even sweeter!
ನನಗೆ ಆ ಕೋತಿಯ ಹೃದಯ ಬೇಕು! ಬೇಕೇ ಬೇಕು! ಈಗಲೇ ಆ ಕೋತಿಯನ್ನು ಕರೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಬನ್ನಿ!

ಅಯ್ಯೋ! ಕೋತಿ ನನ್ನ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗೆಳೆಯ... ಆದರೆ ನನ್ನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಹಠ ಹಿಡಿದಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಈಗ ನಾನು ಏನು ಮಾಡಲಿ?

ಕೋತಿ ಖುಷಿಯಿಂದ ಮೊಸಳೆಯ ಬೆನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ಹತ್ತಿ ಕುಳಿತಿತು. ಮೊಸಳೆ ನದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಈಜುತ್ತಾ ಹೊರಟಿತು.

ನದಿಯ ಮಧ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಾಗ, ಮೊಸಳೆ ಈಜುವುದನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಿತು. ಅದು ಮೆಲ್ಲಗೆ ನಿಜ ಹೇಳಿತು.
When they came to the middle of the river, the crocodile stopped swimming. Softly, it told the truth.

ನಿಜವಾದ ಗೆಳೆಯ, ಯಾವತ್ತೂ ಗೆಳೆಯನಿಗೆ ಮೋಸ ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೋಗು, ಇನ್ನು ಮೇಲೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವನಾಗಿರು!

The little monkey sat in its jamun tree, safe and happy, eating sweet fruit.
