Come, children! Today's story... Punyakoti!
Once upon a time, in a little village in Karnataka, there was a cowherd named Kalinga. He had lots of cows.
Every morning, Kalinga played his flute and lovingly called the cows.
Come, Gange! Come, Gauri! Come, Tunge! Punyakoti, you come too!
Punyakoti had a sweet little calf. The calf was still very small. It played right there in the cowshed.
My darling little one, be a good baby and stay right here. In the evening I will come and give you milk until your tummy is full.
Moo! Okay, Mummy! Come back early this evening!
The cows went to the hill and grazed on green grass. The bells on their necks went ding-dong, ding-dong.
On a big rock on that hill lived a tiger named Arbuta. That day, it was very hungry.
Oh dear! My tummy is going grr, grr! I haven't eaten anything for three days!
The tiger saw the cows. In a single leap, it jumped down from the rock!
The cows got scared and ran away towards home. Only Punyakoti stood alone in front of the tiger.
O cow! I am very, very hungry. I will eat you!
King Tiger, please hear me out. At home, my little calf is waiting for milk.
I will go home, feed my calf, and come right back here. I give you my word!
What? A cow that got away from a tiger will come back to the tiger?
Yes, King Tiger. Truth is my mother, truth is my father. I will not break my promise.
All right then, go, and come back. I will be waiting on this very rock.
Punyakoti hurried home. When it saw its mother, the little calf danced with joy.
Punyakoti gave her calf milk until its tummy was full. She lovingly licked its head.
Gange, Gauri, Tunge! Please look after my little calf like your own child.
My darling little one, listen to everyone. Always tell only the truth. Be a good little one.
Moo! Mummy, come back soon and play with me!
Punyakoti set off towards the hill again. Clip-clop, clip-clop. She had given her word to the tiger!
She was not afraid. Step by step, she climbed the hill.
King Tiger, look. Just as I promised, I have come back.
The tiger was so surprised! Its eyes filled with tears.
Punyakoti, you are like my big sister! I have never seen anyone as truthful as you, anywhere.
I will not hurt such a good big sister. Go home, and be happy with your calf.
The tiger bowed its head and walked away to a faraway forest. It never troubled the village again.
Punyakoti came running home. The little calf jumped and skipped with joy! Kalinga and all the cows were very happy.
From that day on, Punyakoti and her little calf lived happily in the village.
Children, do you know the lesson of this story? Never break a promise you have made. Always tell only the truth!
Truth is our mother and father. Truth is our family and friends. If we stray from the word of truth, God is not pleased.
